I’m a big proponent of making your house function well for your family. Have a dining room you never use? Convert it into a playroom or lounge room you’ll actually sit in! Have an office that you don’t need set up as one? Make it a library or game room! I’ve done this with a few spaces in our home and it’s been transformative for how we live in our house.
The latest conversion we will be making is turning our guest room into a guest room-office combo. We have had our guest room set up as just a room with a king bed the entire time we’ve lived here. And it’s fine! But it ultimately only gets used 5-6 times a year and otherwise is precious square footage we’re not using. It’s not uncommon for me to walk into my office to work on my computer only to find Mike occupying it with something he’s got on his to-do list. Sharing a computer and office space just isn’t working well right now! So, I decided to solve two problems and convert our largely unused guest room into a guest room and office for Mike! Here’s the plan:
We will be replacing the king bed with a queen-sized Murphy bed. I love a Murphy bed. It’s so practical and functional for a space like this! We will get to use the room the majority of the time to serve our family, but then we will also get to set up a designated space for guests when they come to stay with us. I haven’t ordered the Murphy bed yet, but I definitely want one with some built-in shelving like this to make it a bit more decorative and styled. Plus it will be nice for guests to have a place to rest their phone or glasses while they’re sleeping.
I’m going to repurpose a lot of the furniture we already own to set up the space for him and will just need to add a few decorative elements to tie it all together. We will also be putting our laminate flooring into this room (replacing the current carpet), so I will add a rug to warm it up a bit. I’m very excited to see it all some together and to create an area that Mike can have for himself! He’s been having to work around wherever I’m filming or the kids are playing to find some quiet space throughout the day, so I know he will enjoy having an area he can call his own.
