Are you able to enjoy any fall weather where you live yet? We’ve finally had our last 80º day, so I’ve officially removed all of my summer clothes from my closet and replaced them with all things cold weather. I’ve seen a few requests come through for me to share my fall wardrobe essentials and staples, so I thought I’d round up my favorite things to wear this time of year. My fall (and winter wardrobe) is usually pretty neutral and simple. I love to be able to mix and match things, layer pieces, and put together new combinations, so I keep the color palette pretty basic. Plus, since I work from home, I wear a lot of sweaters and leggings throughout the week!
Here’s a look at the fall wardrobe staples that I have in my closet and why I love them:
Chunky Cardigan – A cardigan is probably the most obvious fall wardrobe staple, no? I personally love a chunky knit cardigan this time of year for layering with tees and leggings or throwing over a pretty cami with jeans and booties. Once it gets colder in the winter, I’ll layer a thermal or thicker long-sleeve tee under my cardigans, too, for an extra layer or warmth!
Knitwear – While I still get pretty good use out of my tees by layering them, I do love to have a couple knitwear pieces that can be worn on their own. Some lighter weight sweaters are great for layering with a jacket or vest, and can be incorporated into some workwear wardrobes, if you dress for the office!
Quilted Jacket – I have always loved the style of a quilted jacket. I’m not quite sure what it is about them, but I consider them a staple, for sure! They’re warm and good for layering, while remaining stylish enough to be a part of your outfit. Which makes me wonder something…do you consider your outerwear a part of your outfit when you’re getting dressed? I definitely do! It helps that I have a variety of options to choose from, but unless I’m seriously strapped on time or just running out for a quick errand and don’t care at all about my outfit, I will take the time to consider with jacket or coat will look best with my outfit. Choosing a coordinating color or style with whatever else you’re wearing creates a cohesive outfit!
Sherpa Pullover – This won’t be on everyone’s list, but it’s definitely on mine! I love the softness and function of sherpa material. I will wear a pullover or jacket like this with jeans and sneakers, leggings and a long tee, or just lounging around the house.
Puffer Vest – A puffer vest is probably my favorite thing to wear in the fall! I have a few of these that I’ve collected over the years and they’re my most-worn outerwear each year. I love to layer a puffer vest over a simple long-sleeve tee, thermal top, lightweight sweater, or sweatshirt – pretty much anything!
Layering Tee – For under those cardigans, vests, and pullovers.
Pop of Leopard – This year, leopard is a staple. Whether you add it in with a pair of booties, a bag, or scarf, or are more bold and wear a leopard-print sweater or cardigan, it’s a must-have. I like more subtle pops of it, so I prefer a scarf or bag, but wear it however you like!
Classic Blue Jeans – Because classic blue jeans are a staple for every season and in every closet!
Black Jeans – I’m a firm believer that every woman should have a pair of black jeans in her closet. Not only are they slimming, but they can be dressed up or worn more casually, depending on the occasion and what you’re looking for. I love a good pair of leggings, but there are certainly times when I need/want to dress up a bit more, so I’ll swap the black leggings for black jeans and I’m good to go!
Booties – My go-to shoe in the fall, booties are a great option if you love to wear flats/mules in the summer or early fall. It will get too cold for me to wear my beloved mules soon, so I’ll swap them for some low-heel and mid-heel booties. I love the look of a pointed toe bootie with a pair of black jeans and a chunky pullover knit sweater!
Chelsea Rain Boots – I’ve shared this before, but I love to wear rain boots like this when it’s cold and there’s inclement weather. You can trudge through the wet grass or slush without worrying about ruining your shoes. Since we don’t get a lot of snow here, I don’t often pull out my snow boots, so these rain boots are a great alternative. I’ll wear them with a pair of thick socks as a sort of DIY winter boot!
Hi Lauren,
Love your blog! What size are you wearing in the Sherpa pullover? Thanks!
Diana
Thanks, Diana! I have it in a small.
